Treatment options

Top takeaways

  • Many currently available treatments for pulmonary fibrosis (PF) can improve your quality of life or slow your disease progression.
  • Commonly recommended treatments include oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, medication, symptom management, and, less often, lung transplantation.
  • Not all PF treatments are appropriate for everyone; your doctor will determine the best course of treatment for you.

Treatment offers multiple benefits

While the search for a cure for PF continues, many currently available treatments for the disease have the potential to improve your quality of life and possibly extend it. Treatments for interstitial lung disease (ILD) are aimed at slowing the course of the disease, improving symptoms, and/or helping you stay active.

The benefits of treatment vary, depending on your specific form of ILD, the type of treatment, and other characteristics, such as the amount of lung scarring and any other health conditions you have. Some treatments, like antifibrotic (anti-scarring) medications, may slow down a decline in lung function. As a result, some people may live longer, but results differ from person to person. Other kinds of treatment, like pulmonary rehabilitation, may help a person feel better and be more active. Supplemental oxygen
helps many people reduce the feeling of being out of breath. In this module, you’ll find information about the treatments currently offered.

Patient story: Meet Dot

When she was diagnosed with PF, Dot Delarosa had never heard of the disease. She received a transplant in 2010 and celebrates her lungaversary (anniversary of a lung transplant) every year. In this video, Dot describes her journey with PF and how she’s devoted her life to giving back to other people living with PF.
